Covenant Presbyterian Church Charlotte Mecklenburg Story

I want to sense the scale of what the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership intends to build here, and what could exist only with a $2 million investment from a church just across town and in a separate social and economic universe. In the miracle of faith, John became a member of Sharon Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, where he served as an elder and moderator of the Worship Committee. He entered Union Presbyterian Seminary and graduated with a Master of Divinity degree. Others may judge the purposes of Grace as they will, but this minister doubts that the bishop's primitive flamboyance was the product of complete self-interest. "But he gave those people there," the minister said, "a new self-identity. They had somebody who wanted them. He gave them hope and something to be happy about."

Officers and lay members of Christ Covenant Church comprise our advisory board. God has brought hundreds of college students to Himself and built them into laborers to reach the lost across the globe. Campus Outreach graduates are currently serving in communities and churches from Connecticut to Florida, and from Europe and Africa to Southeast Asia. This magazine named Covenant a Charlottean of the Year not just because it’s devoting $2 million raised from its congregation to help relieve one of this city’s most intractable problems, even though that alone would be an excellent reason.

The Session is our governing body which is comprised of 9 elders, and elected by the congregation to service 3-year terms. These elders make the majority of decisions for the congregation, guided by the Scriptures and the PCUSA’s Constitution, Book of Confessions and the Book of Order. The Session is primarily responsible for the maintenance of worship, property, personnel, and the spiritual well-being of the congregation. The basic form of ministry is the ministry of the whole people of God, from whose midst some are call to ordered ministries. These are described in the New Testament and maintained by this church as elders.

Multi-Ethnic Ministry

Although her “heart grieves” for the children, Myles said she has to put emotion aside. I have to interpret the law as written by the legislature,” she said. Giving the law the broadest possible reading, the writings could inspire copycats and therefore threaten Covenant’s security, they argued. Police have said the writings that they collected as part of their investigation into the March 27, 2023, shooting at the Covenant School that killed three 9-year-old children and three adult staff members are public records. However, they have said they cannot be released until their investigation is concluded.

He suggests that Grace knew what would appeal most to those who could be drawn to his church . That there is member pride in his Cadillac, diamonds, mansions and vast property holdings all in the church's name. Echoing the words of former Police Chief Frank Littlejohn, the minister added that "you will find no member who is not industrious and none who does not respect right and the law." In the end, Myles said she will write an order outlining specific questions she wants them to address. Only after that will she rule on when, if ever, the writings can be released to the public.

Ordered ministries are gifts to the church to order its life so that the ministry of the whole people of God may flourish. Lisa has served as Covenant’s administrative assistant in charge of communications and bookkeeping since April 2011. Before coming to Covenant Lisa homeschooled her two children, which was a profession in itself. John was born and raised in a Roman Catholic family in London, England. As a result, he attended the Jesuit college of Saint Ignatius in Stamford Hill where he witnessed the abuse of power that was the hallmark of the church at that time. Joining one of the predecessor banks of Bank of America in London and later transferring to Charlotte, NC, where he planned to make a career of banking.

Though Covenant Presbyterian Church has not always carried that name, it has always represented that tradition. What began as an outreach church of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Tennessee became what we now know as Covenant Presbyterian…with an unbroken history of Christian dedication and community service. We celebrate our history as a people of faith since the birth of Christ, and we recall the past in order to prepare ourselves for the future. Our response to this covenant is to govern ourselves by Christ’s love. We covenant to serve God by loving our neighbor, our community, and our family, will be recorded as it was for those who came before us. We pray that we, as a church community, stay mindful of our mission as we go out into the world serving Christ, and as we welcome others to join us in fellowship and service.

PIPS served as a kindergarten for minority and immigrant children, with a special focus on teaching English to those children in transition. At one point, the manse was used to house a Cambodian family seeking political refuge under sponsorship of the church. We trudge up a mild slope, passing a stretch of vacant property on either side of a creek bed overgrown with creeper vines and kudzu that chokes the trees. Overhead soar power lines and the towers that support them, on Duke Energy property where the Housing Partnership won’t be able to build. We reach a white brick retaining wall, a Showmars, and behind them a vast parking lot that served a Kmart before the store closed in 2014. The four-story, 185-unit affordable housing complex will begin back here and run for most of the block down to the convenience store at the corner, filling the 12 acres reserved for it and boosting the west side’s roster of affordable units.

The Catholic Diocese of Charlotte entered the market three years ago with a 13-unit complex, Mother Teresa Villa in south Charlotte, built on land the diocese owns. Yet it’s all but unheard of for an individual congregation to invest in a project the way Covenant has. Both Porter and Dodson, who have worked in the field for decades, say they’ve never encountered a similar arrangement. “For a faith-based community to say, ‘You know what, I’m going to partner with an affordable housing developer, and we’re gonna do this’—I don’t know of any,” Porter says.

They can do far more when they join corporate and secular nonprofit partners to accomplish big things. By 1930, the congregation had grown to over 1000 members, and Rev. Herman L. Turner had taken over as pastor. He led the church during the Great Depression as the needs of his congregation changed overnight.

None of the eight attorneys arguing before Davidson County Chancery Court Judge I’Ashea Myles during a two-day hearing claimed to be a copyright expert. Their answers to Myles’ pointed questions about the interplay of federal copyright protections and the Tennessee Public Records Act seemed at times only to muddy the waters further. But the parents of children at the Covenant School added an extra twist to an already complicated case by asserting that they have gained legal ownership of the writings from the shooter’s parents and now hold the copyright. We believe that we are to carry the bread and the cup out of the church and into the streets, office towers, hospitals, boardrooms, classrooms, grocery stores, soccer fields and homes of our city and world. That’s forced the Housing Partnership, as it concentrated on developing low-income housing along the Freedom Drive corridor, to seek help elsewhere. Freedom runs through one of the poorest areas of Charlotte, but it’s gentrifying quickly because it’s so close to uptown. Porter worries that the market could force hundreds of low-income renters from their homes in the coming years without affordable housing. Through our weekend services, Sunday school classes, and serving teams, you’ll discover a deeper sense of life, faith, and community. Governments hesitate to raise taxes, even with growing populations and need for public services, and charitable organizations and businesses have to pick up much of the slack.

And, in spite of difficult times, Rev. Turner raised membership and improved the church’s financial status. It was during the latter years of Dr. Turner’s ministry that he led Covenant and the community to respond early to the rising civil rights movement. The tradition of community service was continued under the tenure of Rev. Roy Talmadge Brumbaugh when he came to the church in November of 1920. Brumbaugh, who had a reputation as a “great biblical scholar,” inspired young parishioners to perform community works.

Though faced with opposition to this decision, the church held fast to its decision. This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. THERE’S NOT MUCH to see yet at the westernmost corner of Freedom Drive and Camp Greene Street on the west side, save for a convenience store and a man cooking and selling jerk chicken from a trailer grill. ” Dodson and Julie Porter are showing me the land on a bright, warm afternoon in early October.
