Most of our clients come to us for guidance on important design decisions, but this is their house, not ours. In 1958, it was donated to Philadelphia where it has stood as a cultural center, museum and beautiful destination ever since. Despite its oversized fame, it's a modest-sized house, with floor-to-ceiling glass walls and a 300-degree-plus view of the city of Los Angeles. Designed by Pierre Koenig in 1959 from a concept developed by the house's owner Buck Stahl, it's also called Case Study House #22. Schindler's private residence is open to the public several days a week, and no reservations are required. This house is in an area of the Silver Lake neighborhood called The Colony, where you'll find a number of Neutra designs on and around Neutra Place.

The bigger the house, the less can be spent per square foot within a given budget. Big cheap houses often haven’t had much time spent in their detailing, and they just end up being cavernous, bland, and soulless places. For this reason, we recommend building the smallest house that will provide the spaces you require. Smaller, meticulously done houses are what most people come to us for. This is not the way most Americans (or Japanese) want to live today.
JAPAN HOUSE Leadership
We have overseen the design and construction of structures as simple as elegant garden seats and gates to projects as complex as multi-million dollar houses, board rooms and executive suites. About half of any job is completed in the shop before our materials go to site. The structural and finish elements of each house are pulled from our lumber decks, jointed to make the lumber perfectly straight, flat and square and then milled to precise dimensions. Following that, each piece is allocated to specific locations in the house. All the joinery is drawn out in ink before the joinery is cut out, and the pieces are then hand-planed to silky smoothness, chamfered, wrapped in shrink wrap, and safely stored before going to the site. After architect Rudolph Schindler came to California in the 1920s to oversee construction of Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House, he designed his residence in West Hollywood.
We design and build entire buildings, wings, cores, and components.

Most of the species of wood we use are not available at building supply yards. Some boards can take years to cure—an unreasonable amount of time for most clients to wait. So for the last forty years we have accumulated lumber to become our own lumber yard. We have on hand two acres covered with lumber decks, about 250,000 board feet of many species sawn to our specifications and cured to proper moisture content. They lived on the floor, without furniture, and without a place to rest one’s back. They were dimly lit and barely heated by a single wood-burning hearth (irori), also used for cooking.

The building is also a showroom for Hasami Porcelain, the acclaimed pottery line founded by co-owner Taku in 2012. With their rough, grainy texture and unadorned designs, Hasami mugs and bowls are instantly recognizable. The collection's name comes from the town of Hasami, in Nagasaki Prefecture, which has a ceramic legacy dating back to the 17th century; the one-of-a-kind pieces are still handmade in the same place over 400 years later. But L.A., home to one of the largest Japanese populations in the U.S., offers elements of Japanese culture spread throughout multiple neighborhoods. Whether you're heading to a ryokan on the west side or enjoying a traditional Japanese garden in Pasadena, the city is ripe with options.

There was a lot of crime and homelessness." Around the end of that decade, things started to turn around.
In this case, there should be a clear split-level transition between the two—a place where shedding footwear is convenient. It requires a lot of time, even with a well equipped shop and its highly skilled people. Our houses start at $400 per square foot and can go up from there if the client wants.

Houses were modest and utilitarian, designed to use limited resources. They required about half the floor area that western houses require for the same functions. They provided a cool, shaded escape from hot summers, and basic shelter from the elements to get occupants through cold winters. The house is located at the crest of Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Mulholland Drive and is open for guided tours by reservation only. The house is owned by the MAK Center, which also runs the Schindler House and you'll find details about the tours at the MAK Center website. Today it's open as a museum, located in Malibu Lagoon State Park and open to the public for guided tours.
Lai was born in Hong Kong and initially went into the family business as a costume designer. But in a bold move, he decided to leave China and move to Los Angeles to pursue fashion, an endeavor in which he was extremely successful. His eccentric and flamboyant designs, inspired by traditional Japanese and Chinese styles, were highly acclaimed and have been worn by Hollywood celebrities. Because of customer response, a second location was opened at 8701 Sancus Boulevard near Polaris Fashion Mall. All lunch entrees include house salad, bean sprouts and steamed rice. If it's a taste of modern-day Little Tokyo you're after, consider starting at Japanese Village Plaza. The pedestrian-friendly zone, though tiny, is like a main artery for the eclectic mix of local families, fashion influencers, and tourists who show up in Little Tokyo every day. The plaza is a refreshing break from the blare of city life, and it's meant to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. The bright and beautiful space houses the fantastic collection of Peter Lai, a fashion designer who fell in love with Japanese design at an early age and has spent decades amassing a treasure trove of art, antiques, and collectibles from Japan.
A Second location was built in the Polaris area just four years later. Today, we are known as one of the best Hibachi Japanese Steakhouses in the Columbus area by many critics. In addition, Consumers’ Choice Awards has given House of Japan its award of excellence each year for the past number of years. The design process for a normal-sized house should and usually does take six months to a year; we believe in giving the process enough time to develop naturally, with frequent communication between East Wind and the client. Many consider Neutra one of the most important twentieth-century architects and this house tour gives a chance to see his home.
